Brookline

The history of Brookline’s Washington Square is quite distinct and is reflective of its character. Washington Street was the first street in Brookline, laid out in 1657; it was used to bring cattle to stockyards in Brighton and Watertown. The street remained unsettled until the 1700’s. Tappan Street in Washington Square was once the location for summer homes of Boston’s wealthy class in the 19th century. Commercial development, though a key part of Washington Square’s culture today, did not come until 1898. The iconic Washington Square clock is reflective of the strong community feeling that is found in Washington Square; funding for its installation and maintenance was raised by the neighborhood itself.
